What is Melanotan 2?

Melanotan 2 (MT2) is a synthetic peptide analog of the naturally occurring hormone alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It is a potent agonist of the melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R) in the body, which are involved in a variety of physiological processes.

One of the most well-known effects of MT2 is its ability to stimulate skin pigmentation, leading to a tanning effect. This is because MT2 activates the MC1R receptor, which is responsible for the production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. MT2 has been used as a sunless tanning agent and is also being investigated as a potential treatment for certain skin conditions, such as vitiligo.

In addition to its effects on skin pigmentation, MT2 has also been shown to have other potential therapeutic applications. It has been studied for its ability to suppress appetite and induce weight loss, as well as its potential for use in the treatment of sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction and female sexual dysfunction.

What is Melanin?

Melanin is the pigment that is responsible for our beautiful variety of skin tones and shades, eye colors, and hair colors. Not only does melanin provide pigmentation for human skin, hair, and eyes, it also provides protection against the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Low levels of melanin mean that the skin is highly susceptible to DNA damage with excess sun exposure. This lack of melanin and its protection against UV radiation means that those individuals with fair skin have a propensity to burn and risk more DNA damage. It also means that a lot of time is invested in their ability to develop a tan safely without burning.

Receiving an adequate supply of vitamin D from the sun without being at risk of developing melanoma is somewhat of a balancing act. Studies have already discovered that staying out of the sun to prevent melanoma can cause vitamin D deficiency.
